Surya Bonaly is a 10-time French figure skating champion, 5-time European figure skating champion, 3-time Olympian (1992, 1994 & 1998), and a 3-time World Figure Skating silver medalist.

Hailing from Nice, France, her adoptive parents named her after the Sankrit word for “the sun.” Shining athletically from an early age, she burst onto the global sports scene by simultaneously winning junior world championships in both tumbling and figure skating. Choosing to pursue her skating career over gymnastics, she became the first female figure skater to attempt quadruple jumps in ISU competition (salchow and toe loop).

Surya is widely known as the only skater to perform a backflip with a full spilt in the air landed on one blade, named the Bonaly backflip. In performing her signature move in the long program at the Olympics in Nagano, Japan, she earned a place in the Guinness World Records.

Upon turning pro, she passionately toured the United States with Champions on Ice for 15 years and became a US citizen in 2005. A motivational speaker, philanthropist and activist, in 2019 she was honored by her home country with the nation’s highest civilian recognition, Commander of the Legion of Honour.

Surya is a US National coach and currently guest coaches around the world. Her coaching style is electric and innovative, channeling her tenure as a world class competitor and her 20 plus years as a featured skater in some of the world’s premier professional skating shows.
